Throughout the Spring 2013 semester, SUNY Cortland students organizing with MICAH and Sustainable Cortland will host and participate in six sustainable foods workshops designed to teach students about the importance of locally grown foods. During the one-hour workshops students will learn about foods produced in Cortland County, learn how to cook/prepare a snack or meal using those foods, and then have the chance to purchase foods that are healthy and sustainable. This project is also designed to teach students about the availability and benefit of using locally grown foods, create links between farmers and students, increase access to locally grown foods, and raise support and awareness for a student Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) share program to begin for the Fall 2013 semester. Finally, a core group of students will be developed from participants in these sustainable foods events who will host two Sustainable Foods Workshops in the fall for people living in poverty so they can learn about healthier eating and shopping practices.
